Beru and Owen in the Prequels
(official news regarding our appearance in episodes 2, 3 and the TV series(?!?))

Beru Beru and Owen Beru and Obi

THE FACTS

What are Beru and Owen's roles in Episodes II and III?

Episode II
In this film, Owen and I are introduced as boyfriend and girlfriend. Owen lives and works on his father's moisture farm. His father, Cliegg, released Shmi Skywalker from slavery and married her. So, Owen was Anakin's brother-in-law. Essentially, we were portrayed as simple, yet caring people.

Unfortunately, my part was VERY small in Episode II -- I had just one line: "Hello". There was a lot more, however. Please go to the Word of Beru for more info.

Episode III
Several years have passed. Owen and I are married, and we come to adopt Luke. We do not have much screentime; however, we play a critical role. After the birth of Padme and Anakin's twins, Yoda, Obi Wan and Bail Organa have a discussion aboard the Blockade Runner. Bail adpots Leia (don't tell Luke!), and Yoda requests that Luke goes with Obi Wan to Tatooine in order to be raised by (you guessed it) Owen and I.

In Episode II, Owen and Beru have known C-3P0 for years, as the "maid" of their father's new wife, Shmi Skywalker. So, in Episode IV, how is it that Owen does not recognize the the two droids whatsoever!?! Did Owen get a memory wipe too? And please don't tell me "there are plenty of protocol droids and astromech droids that look the same as R2 and C-3P0," because C-3P0's mannerisms are quite unique...

Here's my response:

1. When Owen meets C-3PO, he [C-3PO] never says his name. He talks about being a protocol droid, and that's about it. I did not meet C-3PO at all! Most of the interaction took place with Luke. Please also note that R2 was there from a distance, and Owen may not have remembered him because there are many R2 units...

2. When at the dinner table, Luke mentions that the droids may have belonged to Obi-Wan. Here, we see Owen and myself "on edge". This is when Owen asks that the droids have their memories erased. Obviously, now, Owen recalls the droids...

3. My last point is this: Why doesn't C-3PO remember Anakin/Darth Vader later as well as "Master Owen", etc? Well, this is, in fact, due to a memory erase that takes place at the end of Episode III (R2's memory, however, is not erased).

I hear that Owen really IS Luke's Uncle! Explain this!

According to the Return of the Jedi novelization - Chapter 3, Ben and Owen are brothers:

Ben continued his narrative. "When your father left, he didn't know your mother was pregnant. Your mother and I knew he would find out eventually, but we wanted to keep you both as safe as possible. So I took you to live with my brother, Owen, on Tatooine ... and your mother took Leia to live as the daughter of Senator Organa on Alderaan."

Shmi Skywalker, after being freed from slavery, marries Cliegg Lars, Owen's father. Shmi, in return, is now Owen's step-mother, so Owen and Luke are "related" (Owen and Ben Kenobi are NOT brothers). In addition, Padmé, Luke/Leia's mom, dies during childbirth, so she does not deliver Leia to Alderaan. Therefore, I will caution all of you to take note that whatever is written (like in books and comics) may not be "real" unless it was also mentioned on film.

I thought your last name was "Weth". What's up with "Whitesun"???

Well, Lucasfilm has indicated on the official web site that Beru's maiden name IS Whitesun. Therefore, that appears to be my last name. But, if you read your Star Wars Character Guide and the old Star Wars Screen Saver, my last name is Weth. PLUS, in the credits, I am listed as just "Beru". Hmmm...do I smell a conspiracy here? ;)

More Background on the Lars Family

From the Star Wars Movie Trilogy SourceBook

Beru and Owen Lars raised young Luke Skywalker on their moisture farm on Tatooine. The Lars's are representative of a typical moisture farming family on Tatooine. They are hardworking people determined to beat a harsh environment and defend what they have struggled so hard to maintain. They have a healthy pride in their accomplishments and a stubborn independence. There is not a better background for the development of character, discipline and strong values, although this environment can often increase the sense of wanderlust and isolation so common to young people.

Owen Lars, a practical man, raised young Luke with the proper values of home and hard work. For the most part, the tough life of a moisture farmer kept Luke and his adventurous nature in check. Eventually, he began to hang around with a joyriding crowd from the nearby town of Anchorhead, including one Biggs Darklighter.

Beru saw the sparkle in the young man's eyes, and time and again fought on Luke's side when it came to going to the Academy with his friends. Owen remained firm however, and had it not been for the senseless murder of him and his wife at the hands of Imperial stormtroopers, there is little doubt that Luke would have spent "just one more season" on Tatooine.

The Lars's were like most moisture farmers on Tatooine--etching out a living in a thankless environment, with little or no chance for fame or fortune. Making a living season by season was their lot in life, and to their credit, their neighbors report they never spoke ill of the profession.

As with most types of farms, the value of a moisture crop varies unpredictably from year to year. Tatooine's twin suns make the task of predicting such climactic changes infinitely more difficult, as multiple solar flares and gravitational shifts make Tatooine a meteorologist's nightmare. The world, aside from its desert conditions, can be battered by intense sandstorms that pose a severe hazard to any aboveground buildings. Still, season after season, decade after decade, the moisture farmers struggle to remove precious units of water from the parched landscape. Some farmers drill for water while others extract it from the air or loose sands.

Owen Lars used vaporators to retrieve water from the air, which he subsequently directed into underground produce gardens. Not all moisture farmers grow food, as this always doubles the risks of failure every season. Farming and moisture collection are tough enough when attempted alone, but even more so when combined under one roof. Most moisture farmers merely collect water, which they sell as a commodity to local produce magnates.

To their credit, Owen and Beru Lars always managed to scrape out an existence and were in debt to no one when they died. Few couples, and fewer farmers, can claim that distinction.

Owen Lars imparted his sense of "strong values, strong man" to young Luke, while Aunt Beru helped the boy learn a modicum of patience, understanding, and most of all, compassion. They made Luke's early life quite happy as they loved him and raised him to the best of their abilities. They taught him loyalty and commitment, and helped shape the man that became a galactic hero.
